About Corrosion Assessment and Audit

Unlike routine maintenance, an audit evaluates the actual effectiveness of current protection strategies. It examines whether chemical inhibitors are being injected at the right concentrations or if cathodic protection systems are functioning as designed. A critical part of this process is identifying "dead legs"- sections of piping that have been bypassed or capped off. In these stagnant zones, process fluids sit motionless, creating breeding grounds for localized corrosion that can eat through high-grade alloys from the inside out.

The audit also targets Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), a notorious problem in pharma plants where pipes are wrapped for temperature control. Moisture trapped beneath insulation can cause rapid, unseen thinning of the metal. To combat this, auditors use Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as ultrasonic thickness gauging and pulsed eddy current, which allow them to measure the "health" of the metal without cutting into the pipes.

The ultimate goal is to move the organization away from a "run-to-failure" mentality. By identifying specific degradation mechanisms like Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) early, companies can shift to a predictive model. This ensures strict regulatory compliance and environmental safety while providing massive cost savings by extending the time between major plant shutdowns.
